WelcomeWelcome to all neighbours in Roodekrans and Wilropark. This site has been designed just for you to promote safety in our suburbs. And to all criminals, please get lost or caught, we are after you!
Vision
Creating a caring, safe and crime-free neighbourhoodWe believe that the three elements of our vision follow a very specific sequence that can be depicted as phases we need to go through. While there may be some overlap, we will continue to work with and through these phases to be successful in the campaign against crime.
Phase one: CaringWe first need to create a caring neighbourhood, one in which members of the neighbourhood start to care for one another and connect at an interpersonal level. The notion of a caring neighbourhood has been prevalent in smaller towns and villages for decades and centuries. Unfortunately, modern city and suburban life is different. People move into streets, rarely communicate, and often stay close to one another without ever meeting or getting to know one another. The traditional notion of popping in for a cup of coffee has disappeared. Of course, it is not necessarily the neighbours fault. Things have changed and society is different. For instance, dual career couples work longer hours, travel in heavy traffic far to and from work and often leave and return when it is dark, with little chance of meeting, let alone seeing their neighbours. Also, with the huge national increase in crime, people have built high walls and security gates, with the result that there is even less chance of seeing your neighbours. The principle is very simple: If I care for my neighbour, and look after his or her needs, he will be safer, and vice versa.
Phase two: SafeOnce we have started to care for one another, lines of communication will open up, information will be shared, and we will be able to educate and help one another to create a safer neighbourhood. All our campaigns, like patrols, safety awareness meetings, visits to houses, engagement with the Police and other role-players will begin to pay off. A higher level of community awareness will contribute to a safer neighbourhood. For example, if people behave differently by not leaving items in their cars to be stolen, surely the crime rate must go down. Likewise, if the whole community is mobilized against crime, a safer neighbourhood will be created.
Phase 3: Crime-freeOnly when we are successful with phases one and two, i.e. after we have created a caring and safe neighbourhood will we be able to enter into phase 3. This is our ultimate vision – to create a crime-free neighbourhood. Once the criminals observe that the community is united and individually and collectively practice safety in their daily behaviour, they will simply move to other areas, or hopefully be caught before they do so! If the whole community is united, almost every house has a Neighbourhood Watch sign, everyone is connected via SMS and email, and everyone practices safe behaviour, only then will we be able to achieve a crime-free neighbourhood. If we work hard, and if we are successful in all our campaigns, a crime-free neighbourhood can be achieved by 2010. We all want to sit and safely watch the Soccer World Cup as proud South Africans, without fear of being robbed, killed or attacked in our homes and other public places. This is the legacy we need to create for our families, friends, children and visitors to our lovely neighbourhood.
